What’s on my bookshelf

I’m linking up with Anne of Modern Mrs. Darcy to share pictures of my bookshelves today! She asked us to share pictures, a description of where we store our books, and a list of favorites.

I check out most books from the library. The ones I do purchase are usually on Kindle, so my bookshelves mostly contain old favorites and classics.

I held onto favorites from my undergrad English classes and childhood.

I have a bookshelf in our living room, one in my bedroom and one in our guest bedroom. I store my (rarely opened) cookbooks on the bottom shelf of a baker’s rack in the dining room. There are a few business books I refer to fairly often, and keep on a shelf above my desk.

Listing my favorite books makes me antsy because I know I’m leaving some out. A few that stick out in my mind as of right now:

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Shauna Niequist

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brené Brown

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

Literary Classics:

A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O’Connor

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

The Awakening and Selected Short Stories by Kate Chopin (particularly Desiree’s Baby and The Story of an Hour)

  1. I spy some Barbara Kingsolver books on that shelf — love her! I just got Me Before You from the library yesterday… I’m excited to start reading it. Most of my bookshelf-books are oldies but goodies, too. I’m all about the library these days. Haven’t gotten into using an e-reader, yet.

  2. I was scrolling down to say I spy Barbara Kingsolver in the top pic, but Sarah beat me to it! I love many of the books on your list, too – Flannery O’Connor is a big favorite of mine. Have you read The Girl You Left Behind by JoJo Moyes yet? I loved Me Before You, but The Girl was stunning.

  3. Love Little Women and Quiet. Four years later, I still think of The Glass Castle every time I cook a chicken (that part about how good she was at getting all the meat off?).

I want to like Flannery O’Connor but I always just end up being disturbed. Which one is your fav?

  4. I forgot to put my cookbook book shelf. Which I use probably as much or more than any of my other shelves.=) I loved Me Before You, as well as her other book The Girl You Left Behind. They are complicated books but great stories. Stopping by from MMD.

  5. I only linked up my main book shelf…I didn’t even think about my cook book shelf in the kitchen! Oh well, they are so rarely used anyway :) I love many of the books in your list…and Little Women was among my favorites too!

  6. Oh Little Women… definitely one of my favorites, too! I’ve got a LOT of my books on kindle now also which really makes the giant stacks of books I have yet to read in my house all the more absurd now that I think about it!

  7. Love Little Woman! It was one of the first books I got after I really started reading and it’s stayed a favourite. I just read Me Before You and wow, it is a read that stays with me long after I finished. And I’m adding Daring Greatly to my list, I just watched a TED talk by her and she speaks truth.
Love that you have shelves all over your house. =)

  8. I’ve heard so much about The Glass Castle. I know in my county it’s a new standard book for high school juniors. I can’t wait to add some of your favorite fiction books to my to read list. I love when I see a list with only a few books I love and the rest I haven’t heard of–so many new things to discover!

  9. I really enjoyed seeing your bookshelves. Our favorite lists reflect a lot of the same books. I saw Platform by Michael Hyatt on one of your shelves. That is on my too read list. Did you like it? Do you recommend it?

  10. I’ve finally found the REAL reason I should have been an English major–so I could have had the lingering bookshelf collection! I’ll try and comfort myself by telling myself they would have all been cheap trade paperbacks. (If that’s not true, don’t tell me!)

I LOVE all your memoir/nonfiction picks except for The Glass Castle, which I’ve never read. That makes me think I should pick it up…

  11. Oooh! We have similar tastes in books! :) Me Before You completely gutted me, in a good way! Adore Brene Brown’s work, and Quiet was a beautiful book – and it felt like I finally had permission to be the introvert that I’ve always been! :) Will be putting American Wife on my GoodReads list – I keep hearing great things about it! Thanks for giving everyone a peek into your shelves!
