Linking up with Anne of Modern Mrs. Darcy to share what I’ve been reading lately! Maggie and I also have a new episode of Around the Table today where we share everything we’ve been reading, watching, listening to and following!
The Lake House by Kate Morton
The element of mystery makes The Lake House a page turner. An eleven-month-old child goes missing, and is never found, but his disappearance leaves the family broken and haunted. Decades later, a detective on leave and reckoning with her own past, learns of the unsolved case and becomes enthralled with it. Morton masterfully reveals new details bit by bit, and nothing is quite what it seems. I totally recommend for a plane trip or rainy afternoon!
Love and Other Ways of Dying by Michael Paterniti
I was honored to join Anne as a guest on her podcast, What Should I Read Next? In each episode, she gets an idea of her guest’s tastes and then recommends books for them. A few days later, Anne texted me and asked if I’d heard of this book. Because of my love for stories with a lot of grey area, she said I would enjoy it. In a twist of serendipity, I’d JUST picked it up from the library. Each essay is vastly different, but I’m completely taken with his descriptions and storytelling. Elizabeth Gilbert describes his writing as “humane, devastating and beautiful,” and I couldn’t agree more.
The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin
I knew nothing about New York socialites in the 1950’s, and found their world enthralling. Based on real people and relationships, this novel dives into the social and emotional lives of American royalty, particularly the relationship between literary sensation Truman Capote and Babe Paley. At the heart of the novel, beneath the gossip, betrayals, and wealth, is the deep, human longing to be loved. A fascinating, heartbreaking read.
