What I’m reading

Twitterature with Modern Mrs. Darcy

A brief departure from my doing less to build more: holiday edition series today to link up with Anne and share what I’ve been reading. She calls it Twitterature because the reviews are meant to be short and tweet length!

I haven’t buried my nose in many books this month, but I hope to catch up on our big trip to visit family over the next couple weeks.

cuckoo's calling

The Cuckoo’s Calling by J.K. Rowling

A mystery published under a pseudonym, The Cuckoo’s Calling fell flat for me. The character development and storytelling is phenomenal, but I didn’t get hooked. When my library time was up, I returned it without finishing it.

I never got into Harry Potter either.

The Engagements

The Engagements by J. Courtney Sullivan

I listened to the audio version of this one. The novel shares the complications, joys and sorrows of several marriages across almost 100 years. The history of diamond engagement rings is interspersed throughout, which is a fun and interesting twist.

  1. You didn’t like Cuckoo’s Calling? I really loved it. Then again, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan AND I love mystery novels. The Engagements sounds interesting… I love stories where many plotlines weave together throughout the book. I love the idea of listening to audiobooks but I don’t have long enough chunks of time to listen to them. Lately I’ve been listening to 10 minute chunks of podcasts during my commute.

  2. I’ve been really curious about The Cuckoo’s Calling, but many of the reviews I’ve read sound like yours. I think I will keep it safely on my “Only Read If Nothing Else Is Available” list :)

  3. I’m so glad to find someone else who didn’t love The Cuckoo’s Calling. I was listening to it on audio and also didn’t finish it… and I love, love, loved Harry Potter. Totally different I know but I still think it’s sort of funny.

  4. I didn’t get into JK Rowling’s other book either. I LOVED Harry Potter though and am currently re-reading them just for the heck of it, for probably the 8th time.

  5. I’ve checked Cuckoo’s Calling out of the library and keep returning it unread. I really do mean to read it, honestly! And I actually did like Harry Potter. :)

I really enjoyed The Engagements. It wasn’t one of the best things I’ve ever read, or anything, but I thought the construction was interesting and I liked it enough to add her previous book Maine to my reading list.
