Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Faith is one of those loaded words. We can easily assign all sorts of meanings when we hear the word “faith” that the speaker never originally intended. I love this verse because it gives a Biblical definition for faith. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
We can have faith in many unseen things. We can have faith that if we stick to an exercise plan, we will lose weight. If we stick to a financial plan, we will pay off our debts. We can have faith that our friends and families will follow through when they give their word. We can have faith that the economy will recover.
We have reasonable expectations when we have faith in those things, but we will still be disappointed at times. We will let ourselves down. Our friends and families will let us down simply out of human frailty, not necessarily a lack of integrity. There is nothing in this world that we can put our total faith in that will never disappoint.
But what follows Hebrews 11:1 are the stories of believers who took action based on their faith in God. We will never be disappointed when we put our faith in God. We can have unwavering conviction in things not yet seen which God has promised.
Numbers 23:19
God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
